JAPANESE FLOWER
TATTOO

Versatility in type and color.

Behind a Japanese flower tattoo usually lurks a meaning.

The Japanese style is not as popular in the West as it has been, but this style has a long history behind it. In fact, it is one of the oldest tattoo styles in the world.

Japanese flowers are known for their versatility in symbolism and design. Many saturated colors are used, but black and white is also possible.

What is the meaning of Japanese flower tattoos?

Lotus flower Japanese tattoo

The lotus is of great importance in Eastern culture.

Japan is a Buddhist country, and you notice this in the symbolism of the flowers: a lotus flower grows in muddy waters and represents vigor, as well as inner peace and self-control.

This is why the lotus flower is often depicted in bloom: on a spiritual level, you have then achieved enlightenment .

The meaning of the colors of the lotus flowers is:
  • blue = spirituality
  • red = love
  • purple = wealth
  • white/pink = purity
  • green = peace
  • black = death, but also power

Rose flower Japanese tattoo

The peony is also called the queen of flowers.

In Japanese culture, this is more of a male flower. It symbolizes joy, healing and success in life.

Chrysanthemum (= chrysanthemum) flower Japanese tattoo

In the West, we put chrysanthemums in the cemetery.

In Japan, the chrysanthemum symbolizes perfection, rejuvenation and longevity.

The meaning of the colors of the chrysanthemums is:
  • pink and red = love
  • white = loyalty
  • yellow = unrequited love
  • green/tourquoise = ambition, youthfulness and vitality

Cherry blossom Japanese tattoo

The sakura (the Japanese term for cherry blossoms) have a very short life span. They remind us how short and precious life is.

The cherry blossom symbolizes happiness, love, spring and, above all, a new beginning.

Consequently, the cherry blossom is the national flower of Japan.

Can Japanese flower tattoos be incorporated into a sleeve?

The Japanese style is made for large body parts: a whole arm, leg, chest, back... They are usually combined with other Japanese elements such as a koi, a Japanese dragon...
This style is also often used for cover-ups.

There is a designation for each combination (arm + chest, 7/10th of the arm, with or without armpit...). Donburi means a body suit: all of your body is covered with tattoos. Hikae is the chest, Nagasode is a full sleeve. For example, you can combine a Nagasodewith Hikae.
